Highlights

Overview

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding trekking routes in the Everest region of Nepal. Organized by Special Trek & Expedition, this two-week journey takes you deep into the heart of the Himalayas, offering panoramic views of towering peaks, glacial lakes, and authentic Sherpa culture. Unlike the more popular Everest Base Camp trek, the Gokyo Lake route is quieter and equally—if not more—beautiful, particularly due to the turquoise glacial lakes and the ascent of Gokyo Ri, a lesser-known vantage point offering views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

This trek combines high-altitude adventure with rich cultural immersion. You will traverse traditional Sherpa villages, interact with locals, visit ancient monasteries, and walk alongside yaks carrying supplies. The highlight of the trek is the exploration of the Gokyo Valley and its pristine lakes, especially during the rest day at Gokyo, where trekkers can fully absorb the peace and grandeur of the high Himalayas. The ascent to Gokyo Ri (5,483m) is a physically challenging but rewarding endeavor, offering one of the best panoramic views in all of Nepal.

Best Time to Trek

The ideal seasons for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, the skies are usually clear, offering the best mountain views, and the temperatures are moderate at both lower and higher altitudes. Springtime also brings blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn offers crisp air and post-monsoon clarity. Winter (December–February) can be extremely cold with heavy snow, and the summer/monsoon season (June–August) brings heavy rains and clouds, making the trails slippery and views obstructed.

Food and Accommodation

Throughout the trek, Special Trek & Expedition arranges accommodations in local tea houses, which are simple lodges offering basic but comfortable amenities. You will be sleeping in twin-sharing rooms with shared bathrooms. In lower altitudes like Namche Bazaar and Lukla, more modern amenities like hot showers and electricity are available for a small fee, while in higher areas, facilities become more basic.

Meals are typically hearty and designed to provide the energy needed for long trekking days. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included and served at tea houses along the trail. Popular dishes include dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, pasta, Tibetan bread, momos (dumplings), and sometimes Western options like pancakes or fried eggs. Vegetarian meals are widely available, and the food is hygienically prepared with trekkers' health in mind.

Trekking Permits

For the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, you will need a few permits, all of which are arranged by Special Trek & Expedition as part of the package. These include the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. If you’re flying from Kathmandu to Lukla, no TIMS card is required for this route. However, having proper documentation is essential, and your guide will handle the administrative aspects to ensure a smooth journey.

Why Choose the Everest Gokyo Lake Trekking?

The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is perfect for those who want an off-the-beaten-path experience in the Everest region. While the traditional Everest Base Camp route is more crowded, the Gokyo route offers serene trails and breathtaking landscapes with far fewer trekkers. This makes it ideal for photographers, adventurers, and anyone looking for a more tranquil Himalayan experience. The trek offers an unparalleled view of the world's highest peaks without the crowds, and the journey through the Gokyo Valley is truly unique in its geological and natural beauty.

Another major reason to choose the Gokyo route is the summit of Gokyo Ri, which is considered by many trekkers to provide better views than even Kala Patthar. From the top, you get a 360-degree panorama of four 8,000-meter giants—Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Additionally, the chain of glacial lakes (six in total) that dot the valley are a rare sight and provide a peaceful contrast to the harsh mountain terrain surrounding them.

Day 3 : Fly to Lukla (2,640m), Trek to Phakding – Approx. 3 Hours

A short but breathtaking early morning flight takes you from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your porters and begin the trek through picturesque Sherpa villages and forests. The trail gently descends and follows the Dudh Koshi River, with stunning views of Nupla Peak (5,885m) and glimpses of Kusum Kanguru (6,367m). Along the way, you’ll pass traditional mani walls, prayer wheels, and suspension bridges before reaching Phakding, a riverside settlement. Overnight in a teahouse at Phakding.

Day 4 : Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) – Approx. 5 Hours

Today’s trek leads you deeper into the Khumbu region. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges and charming villages like Monjo, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. After registering your permits, the trail climbs steeply toward Namche Bazaar. On a clear day, you may get your first glimpse of Mount Everest. You’ll also enjoy panoramic views of Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru, and Kongde Ri. Namche, the bustling trade hub of the region, offers bakeries, cafes, and gear shops, making it an ideal stop for trekkers. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 5 : Rest Day at Namche Bazaar for Acclimatization

Acclimatization is essential before ascending higher altitudes. Namche Bazaar, perched on a steep hillside, offers the perfect place to adapt. You can explore the Sherpa Culture Museum and Everest Photo Gallery or hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m), offering jaw-dropping views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. Alternatively, walk to the nearby village of Khunde to visit the Hillary Hospital. The day also allows time to relax in one of the many bakeries or cafés and take in the mountain lifestyle. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 6 : Trek from Namche to Dole (4,040m) via Khumjung – Approx. 6 Hours

Today’s journey begins with a visit to Khumjung, a traditional Sherpa village with a monastery said to house a Yeti scalp. The trail climbs gradually past chortens and prayer flags toward Mong La (4,000m), offering breathtaking views of Ama Dablam and other nearby peaks. From Mong La, the trail descends steeply to Phortse Tenga, a peaceful lunch spot near the river. Afterward, you ascend through enchanting rhododendron and birch forests to reach Dole. This less-traveled section offers a serene trekking experience. Overnight at teahouse in Dole.

Day 7 : Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4,150m) – Approx. 5 Hours

Leaving Dole behind, the trail steadily climbs through alpine terrain. Trees give way to juniper shrubs and high-altitude meadows, with occasional sightings of grazing yaks. As you gain elevation, views of Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, begin to dominate the skyline. You’ll pass through small summer settlements used by yak herders during the warmer months. This relatively short trekking day allows you to arrive in Machhermo by lunchtime, giving you ample time to rest, explore the surroundings, or visit the nearby Himalayan Rescue Association post. Overnight in Machhermo.

Day 8 : Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo (4,750m) – Approx. 5 Hours

Today’s trek leads you into the heart of the Gokyo Valley. The trail ascends to Pangka and then descends to the riverbank, where you begin climbing alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s largest glacier. As you approach the glacial lakes, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. You pass the first and second Gokyo Lakes before reaching the third, Dudh Pokhari. The village of Gokyo sits beside its turquoise waters, surrounded by icy peaks including Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang. The reflection of mountains in the lake is simply mesmerizing. Overnight at Gokyo.

Day 9 : Rest Day at Gokyo – Explore Gokyo Valley and Lakes

This is a well-earned rest and exploration day in Gokyo. You can choose to hike to the Fourth and Fifth Lakes for a closer view of the towering Cho Oyu and the remote mountain wilderness that stretches into Tibet. The Fifth Lake offers one of the best panoramic viewpoints in the region, showcasing the Everest range, including Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu. Gokyo village is quiet and scenic, perfect for relaxing or journaling by the lake. Enjoy the high-altitude silence and unique beauty of the glacial lakes. Overnight at Gokyo.

Day 10 : Climb Gokyo Ri (5,483m), Return to Machhermo – Approx. 5 Hours

Today is a highlight of the trek. Starting before sunrise, you ascend Gokyo Ri for an unforgettable sunrise view over the Himalayas. The steep climb is demanding but incredibly rewarding. From the summit, you’ll witness a 360-degree panorama of towering peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and many more. This viewpoint rivals the more famous Kala Patthar in grandeur. After soaking in the views, descend back to Gokyo for breakfast and begin your return journey, retracing the trail to Machhermo. The descent is easier and offers time to relax. Overnight in Machhermo.

Day 11 : Trek from Machhermo to Namche Bazaar – Approx. 5 Hours

Retracing your steps, the trail descends from Machhermo to Dole and continues through lush rhododendron forests. As you lose altitude, you’ll notice the return of greenery and thicker vegetation. The trail climbs briefly to Mong La before making a long descent back to Namche Bazaar. Along the way, enjoy final glimpses of the high Himalayas. Once in Namche, take advantage of modern comforts like bakeries and internet cafés, or shop for souvenirs. This is a good night to celebrate your successful journey through the Gokyo Valley. Overnight at Namche Bazaar.

Day 12 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla – Approx. 6 Hours

Your final day of trekking takes you from Namche back to Lukla. The path follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and passing through the villages of Monjo, Phakding, and Chheplung. Though mostly downhill, it requires effort as you walk for several hours through changing terrain. After a final uphill stretch to Lukla, you’ll arrive at the starting point of your trek. Celebrate the end of this amazing journey with your guide and porters. Reflect on the memories created along the trail. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 13 : Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu – Farewell Dinner

An early morning flight brings you back to Kathmandu, offering one last aerial view of the Himalayas. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel where you can rest, refresh, and enjoy the comforts of the city. In the evening, Special Trek & Expedition will host a special farewell dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant featuring cultural performances and local cuisine—a fitting way to end your Himalayan adventure. Overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 14 : Final Departure – Drive to Airport

After breakfast at the hotel, it’s time to say goodbye to Nepal. A representative from Special Trek & Expedition will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. You’ll leave with unforgettable memories of the Gokyo Lakes, the soaring peaks of the Everest region, and the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people. We wish you a safe journey home and hope to see you again in Nepal!
