Highlights

Overview

The Lumba Sumba Pass & Makalu Base Camp Trek, organized by Special Trek & Expedition, is one of Nepal’s most adventurous and less-traveled trekking routes. This trek was identified and explored by the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) in 2012, making it a relatively new gem in the eastern Himalaya. Unlike other popular trekking trails, this route takes you through untouched landscapes and authentic villages, offering a deep insight into traditional Nepali culture and lifestyle. The trek is set in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) and Makalu Barun National Park, regions renowned for their pristine natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and stunning mountain panoramas.

One of the main highlights of this trek is the Lumba Sumba Pass, which stands at an elevation of 5,039 meters. Crossing this high-altitude pass provides trekkers with breathtaking views of the towering peaks of Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, and Baruntse. The journey also includes a visit to Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 meters, a paradise for mountain lovers and photographers. Trekkers pass through remote villages like Mitlung, Lelep, Eladanda, and Olangchung Gola, observing traditional farming practices, ancient monasteries, and local customs. Along the route, travelers can spot wildlife such as the elusive snow leopard, red panda, and various bird species, while enjoying the serene landscapes of alpine meadows, dense forests, and glacial rivers.

This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences combined with spectacular mountain scenery and cultural immersion.

Best Season for Lumba Sumba Pass & Makalu Base Camp Trek

The best time to trek the Lumba Sumba Pass & Makalu Base Camp is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. Spring, from March to May, is an excellent time to trek as the rhododendron forests bloom with vibrant colors, making the trail exceptionally scenic. The weather is generally clear, allowing unobstructed views of the towering Himalayan peaks, while temperatures are moderate, making the trek comfortable for acclimatization and exploration. Bird watchers will also enjoy spotting the unique Himalayan bird species that are active during this season.

The post-monsoon season, from late September to November, is equally ideal. During this time, the skies are usually clear and crisp, offering spectacular panoramic views of peaks such as Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Chamlang. The rivers and waterfalls are full from the monsoon, creating beautiful landscapes along the trekking route. However, this season can be slightly colder at night, especially at higher elevations like Lumba Sumba Pass and Makalu Base Camp, so trekkers need to be well-prepared with warm clothing.

Winter (December to February) can be extremely cold, with snow making some sections challenging or even risky, while monsoon season (June to early September) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and possible landslides.

Season summary:

Special Trek & Expedition recommends trekking in spring or autumn for the most rewarding experience, combining scenic beauty with safer trekking conditions.
